Painting your walls creatively is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways of transforming the look of your living space. There are many things to consider when choosing the color of your paint. Of course, you should consider the furnishings that will be in the room. If you have a couch pillow or arm cover you can easily take it to a paint store and match your chosen color to the exact shade you want.  If the room has not yet been furnished, your imagination is free to create whatever it pleases. Did you know that wall color affects the mood of the people in the room? Lets take a look at the psychological affect certain colors have.

Red raises the energy level of the room. It can communicate love and passion, but also anger. If you want to stir up excitement and stimulate conversation, red is a good choice. The living room or dining room where you probably do your entertaining would be a great place for the color red, as would the kitchen or playroom where lots of activity is generally taking place.

Crimson is probably not a good choice for any room as it invokes feelings of rage and hostility. If you really love the color crimson you might be best to use it as an accent color.

Yellow makes people happy as it communicates the joy of sunshine. It is an optimistic color. However, it needs to be done in fairly small spaces, as it is the hardest color for the eyes to take in. The kitchen is a perfect room for yellow because of the smaller amount of wall space that most kitchens afford. Bathrooms are another good choice for yellow.

Blue is a favorite because it is calming. It makes us think of clear skies and ocean water. It actually brings down blood pressure and slows respiration and heart rate. It is good for bedrooms and also bathrooms but looks best when it’s balanced with warm hues in the other décor of the room. If it is not balanced with warmer colors it can actually appear a little cold and sad.

Purple can have two different effects depending on the hue used. If you choose a dark shade, it suggests wealth as well as creativity. Used in a less intense shade, it can have the same calming effect as blue but without the risk of appearing cold or sad. When used sparingly, purple is an excellent color to give some depth to your color scheme.

Green is a great color for almost every room of the house. It has the same calming effect as blue with the cheerful effect of yellow. It is supposed to help people relax and as it is believed to also be good for fertility, it’s a great choice for the bedroom as well!

Orange brings excitement. It is an energetic color and makes people feel enthusiastic. It is a little overpowering to use as a main color scheme in most rooms of the house but could be perfect in the exercise room! It is also a great accent color in any room that generally sees lots of activity.

Black, gray, white and brown are all neutral colors. These are flexible colors and are generally used to pair with a stronger color. Some people believe that black is a good accent color and gives a color scheme more depth.  Brown can be either boring, or rich. Chocolaty brown can be warm and inviting and when certain techniques are used (like a faux leather) can look rich and antiqued. If they use lighter shades without a stronger accent color, it can look dull or dry. White by itself can look too sterile, like a hospital room. But it pairs great with any other vibrant color and when paired with black, looks very sophisticated and formal.

Though you probably would not want to use this information exclusively to decorate your entire house, when combined with your own personal tastes and preferences, it can be helpful in creating the ambience you desire in each room.
